Summary
In "Chapter 18: The Carnigourd," Zahrah is fascinated by the numerous creatures she sees over the next three days. She talks about the plants that have grown free of human interference. However, she accidentally stumbles into the voracious plant called a carnigourd while thinking about her friendship with Dari. She recalls no longer being as afraid as before, including of heights and the dark. Three years prior, she had followed him into a tree, much to her mother's delight.
In the present, a root grabs her ankle and she panics. This triggers the scorpion poison, knocking her out until she hits a rock. She remembers that its emotions are fueled by sound and sings another song her mother used to. The plant relaxes and Zahrah escapes.
In "Chapter 19: Ghostly Shadows," Zahrah continues after two weeks in the jungle. She does not ask the compass...
