Summary

While the novel is clearly told from a future perspective, present tense has been used when describing the events that the narrator is referencing. Any reflection the narrator has after the end of her adventure is clearly labeled.

The novel opens with a short letter by Zahrah Tsami criticizing the journalist that took pictures of her and Dari. Zahrah calls herself a Windseeker and says it is time for her to tell her own story.

"Prologue: My World" starts as the doctor proclaims the newborn Zahra to be dada, or a child born with special powers and vines within their hair. Her progressive parents teach her to be proud of her abilities while others treat her poorly.

The culture in her home, the Ooni Kingdom, is focused on the vanity as everyone carries mirrors and wears the most fashionable clothes. Zahra describes...
