Montgomery, Alabama

Montgomery is where Zelda lives in the beginning of the novel, which starts in the year 1918. The Sayre family has been living in Montgomery long before Zelda was born, and the family is well known for Zelda’s father’s position as the town’s court judge. As Montgomery is located in the South, Zelda sees herself as a country girl, whereas Scott is a city boy. When Scott initially tells Zelda he wants to move up north with her, Zelda asks herself, “Who would I be, away from Montgomery?” (36). Though Zelda is excited at the prospect of moving, she maintains an attachment to her hometown and the family that lives there. Though Zelda leaves Montgomery at the age of 19, part of it always stays with her.
