Being an autobiographical poem, “You’re” is told from the point of view of the poet herself as she considers her impending motherhood. Throughout the poem the speaker displays signs of both nervousness and excitement (reflecting Plath’s own conflicted attitude towards parenthood), seeing their unborn child as both promising and alien. Although the poem has the potential to be divisive and tragic, it ultimately portrays the speaker as a hopeful figure; they look forward to meeting this new stranger and welcoming them into their life.
