Summary
Mungo hides St. Christopher’s body in a small hollow. When Gallowgate returns to camp, Mungo pretends that St. Christopher is in the other tent. Mungo then feigns attraction towards Gallowgate. Gallowgate tells Mungo that Mo-Maw “is disgusted by you… She practically begged us to take ye away” (242). He says he is not sure he can trust Mungo; Mungo assures him that he is trustworthy and will not tell others about the weekend’s events.
After several days of “optimism… [and] happiness” (244) spent with James, Mungo nervously gives him a cassette as a birthday present. They continue to flirt, kiss, and playfully tease one another. James shows him a pornographic magazine with scenes of gay men. They eventually pleasure themselves as they lie next to one another.
