Summary
Jodie and Mungo confront Mr. Campbell after they hear him beating his wife. As Mr. Campbell grows angry, Mr. Calhoun interrupts the confrontation. Mr. Campbell revels in the chance to hurt Mr. Calhoun. Eventually Mrs. Campbell emerges and accompanies Jodie and Mungo upstairs. She dismisses Jodie’s concerns about Mr. Campbell’s abusive behavior. Referring to Mo-Maw, she argues, “if anyone should understand making excuses for the person they love, then it’s you two” (169).
On the second night at the loch, St. Christopher enters Mungo’s tent. He lies close to Mungo and sexually assaults him, his hand wrapped around Mungo’s throat “like a vice” (172). Later, Gallowgate enters the tent and comforts Mungo. He apologizes for St. Christopher’s actions. Gallowgate then “hammered his fist into Mungo’s face” (175) before violently raping him.
