Summary

In Chapter 1, Joseph “Joe” Goldberg believes he has seen the perfect woman when Guinevere Beck, known by her last name, walks into his bookstore. Joe believes he will be able to interpret Beck’s personality by the fiction books that she chooses. He embarrasses himself by talking about the way he thinks the Kindle has taken the integrity out of reading but is impressed that Beck listens. He thinks it is a good sign that Beck buys a book by Paula Fox, one of his favorite authors. Then, he becomes angry when Beck says it is for a friend. After Beck leaves, Joe thinks that she intentionally bought her books using a credit card so he could know her name.
