Summary
In Chapter 14, Leiris sorts through all of Hélène’s clothing and accessories. He notes that he does not want to move her possessions, but her funeral is in two days and he must choose something for her to wear. Each item that he encounters evokes a certain memory. A wool coat reminds him of the walks they took in the forest; he finds the tulle skirt she wore when they first kissed and a collection of t-shirts that demonstrated her relaxed nature. He claims that she put on make-up because she thought was plain, in the process transforming herself from a reserved woman to a “majestic lady,” both of which Leiris states he loved equally (103).
