The lens of the eye hardened over time and made it difficult to focus-something Charlotte learned after she crawled into a rabbit hole. That’s what her dad called it when she got swept up researching useless information online.

Importance: This quote is important because it establishes the concept of Rabbit Holes that continues throughout the novel. Both Charlotte and Ben tend to spiral into these Rabbit Holes in their own thinking. Sometimes, they swerve completely off topic until another character brings them back. These Rabbit Holes also start all of Charlotte’s chapters to further establish that she is the type of character to research that kind of information on her own time.
The opposite of evolution was devolution. Complex species reverting to simpler forms. It was a contested and controversial concept, but it fit Ben’s parents perfectly.
