The Streets of New York City
Jayne spends much of the novel on the streets of New York, either moving from one location to another or talking with people. Some of the most significant moments take place outside, particularly conversations that she has with Patrick. She speaks to him outside the dive bar where she first meets him, where they catch up with one another on where their lives have gone since high school. Later, they confess intimate details of failed relationships to one another outside of June’s apartment before beginning their own romance. Jayne finds New York vivid and intoxicating, and her love of the city and descriptions of it contribute to its presence in the story.
