Importance: This quotation is an example of the physical nature of the novel’s narrative style. The repetition of the word “swipe” parallels the motion of swiping through profiles on Tinder, and shows Jayne’s impatience as she does so. At the time, she is looking at Tinder as a way of turning her mind away from Jeremy, for whom she still has feelings. Her comment about disposability ties into a larger theme of disposability in the novel, and shows her desire to dispose of others because she herself feels undervalued.
