Summary

In Chapter 9, Jayne meets her friend Ivy at a bakery. She at first refuses Ivy’s offer to buy her something, eventually ordering a milk tea without sugar, and then turns down an invitation to go to a diner. Ivy asks if they are not friends anymore. Jayne falls silent, but then tells Ivy that she will text her. At her job at a kitchen and home decor store, Jayne responds unenthusiastically to gossip, and her coworker Mari comments that Jayne is difficult to be friends with. At home, Jayne proceeds to “ransack” (53) the refrigerator and cupboards.

On her way to school in Chapter 10, Jayne is happy to see a woman with black hair in a fur jacket. Jayne has seen this woman many times, sometimes spitting food into napkins after chewing it, and thinks of her as “Cruella” (55). Patrick has sent Jayne...
