Summary

The novel is narrated in the first person by a young Korean American woman named Jayne Baek, a college student living in New York City. In Chapter 1, Jayne is at a restaurant with her ex-boyfriend and roommate, Jeremy, and an attractive girl he is seeing named Rae. Jayne is intimidated by Rae’s looks and her smallness. Jayne was initially drawn to Jeremy’s ambition, but now her idea of him is less favorable, and he owes her rent money.

In Chapter 2, Jayne buys a drink with a fake ID. She remarks that no one ever notices that the name on her ID does not match the name on her credit card. In the mirror behind the bar, Jayne spots her older sister, June. June tells Jayne that she needs to talk to her and that she will send a car for her...
