Summary
The prologue consists of one chapter titled “The sisters” (3). This chapter is narrated by the youngest Garcia sister, Fifi. Fifi and two of her sisters, Carla and Sandi, commiserate over the recent publication of a book written by their other sister, Yolanda, a.k.a Yo. They are all angry because the book draws on real events from their lives. In the midst of the complaining, Sandi tells Fifi that she is pregnant after being artificially inseminated by sperm imported from the Dominican Republic (where the Garcias are from). Sandi tells Fifi not to reveal her pregnancy to Yo, and Yo calls Fifi to defend herself. Laura calls Fifi and recounts an incident from the girls' childhood in which Yo ran away to a nearby convent.
