Politics is Personal
One of the most significant themes of the novel is the connection between the personal and political. Albertalli and Saeed use this theme to show the young adult reader that politics is indeed personal, especially for minority populations, and has real and personal impacts on people they know and love. This theme also shows that young adults, even if they cannot vote can still make a difference through weaving together the personal and political.
