Point of View

The novel is told from two first person points of view - Jamie Goldberg, and Maya Rehman. Both are juniors in high school, living in the suburbs of Atlanta Georgia. Though Maya and Jamie have very different viewpoints, Albertalli and Saeed use similar points of view for both of their characters. For both, they explain the various religious practices and terms to educate the reader on Judaism for Jamie, and Islam for Maya. For both they also relate exact text message conversations for the reader to review the texts objectively themselves. Both Maya and Jamie feel unsure if the other likes them, romantically. They also use a confessional style for both Jamie and Maya, as if both are confiding in a friend with the reader, or writing in a journal.
