Summary

The novel begins with the Chapter heading Chapter One “Jamie” as Sophie says, “Oranges don’t have nipples” (1). Jamie grabs a bag to gather tangelos. He and his 12-year-old sister Sophie have been sent to Target for snacks by Gabe, the assistant campaign manager for a special election in their district. Two girls walk by and Jamie is distracted by one he describes as “South Asian” who looks familiar (2). Sophie teases him for staring and Jamie quickly grabs a tangelo, which causes the entire tangelo pyramid to crash on the floor. The girls stare as the oranges “thwack thwack thwack” to the floor (4). A Target employee named Kevin, comes over to help while Sophie films a boomerang, and Jamie sees the girls walk away.
