Summary

In Chapter 19, June visits her mother in Philly. She is surprised to learn that her mother is selling the house and moving to Florida. June spends the evening going through her old notebooks. They remind her “that writing didn’t used to be so miserable” (255).

Over dinner, June’s mother encourages June to give up on writing, return to school, and start a new career. She has never understood June’s artistic pursuits. June feels incapable of explaining that writing is “the whole world” to her (259).

In Chapter 20, although she has plenty of time, June feels incapable of writing. She tortures herself by lying in bed reading “every cruel thing the internet” has to say about her (264).
