Summary

Section five opens in winter 1945. Syvia overhears Isaac tell Haya that a drunk Nazi approached Isaac on the street and told Isaac that all the Jews would be shot dead in the cemetery. Some of the men are instructed to dig large holes in the cemetery. Isaac learns that the Nazis are planning to kill the Jews the following day. Isaac and others try to find out if this is a hoax, but more soldiers have arrived.

Bombs are dropped on dropped on the village and Syvia and the others can hear them in the distance. They discover when trying to flee the building that the Nazis have locked everyone inside. The Director, a Jewish man who works for the Nazis, tells everyone that he has a key that he stole the day before. The Director unlocks the door and sends everyone out...
