Summary
Section two begins with Part Two, which gives the reader further information about the Lodz ghetto. Jews from other countries were sent to the ghetto and fuel is scarce during the winter. Starvation is a primary concern and the food available “often rotten” (37). The United States enters WWII in 1941.
Syvia’s story continues in spring 1941 and the adults in the ghetto have a saying: “’Live for today, for tomorrow we may fry in the pan’” (38). Hava goes missing. Syvia and Itka play together with their dolls. Syvia is forbidden to go outside unless she is with one of her parents. Dora dreams that Syvia goes missing like Hava. While the others are at work, Syvia cleans up in the apartment and is pleased when Haya brings home new cleaning rags.
