Chapter 5 Summary
The family receives notice that Sookan has to start going to school. Mother and Inchun warn her not to speak any Korean at school because she will be beaten if she does. Since she has never spoken Japanese, she is only to say, "Hai, Sensei!" which means, "Yes, Teacher!" Sookan goes to school on her first day to find that her teacher is Narita Sensei, Captain Narita's wife! Since the girls all have to stand in order of height, and Sookan is the smallest, she has to stand at the front of the line, next to Narita Sensei. When the school sings the Kamigayo, the Japanese National Anthem, Sookan can not bring herself to sing it, but Narita Sensei notices that she is only mouthing the words.
