Narrator
The first person narrator remains unnamed throughout the novel. She is also the protagonist of Y/N. The narrator is a writer and a freelance “English copywriter for an Australian expat’s business in canned artichoke hearts” (12). She lives in Berlin with her flatmate Vavra. She spends the majority of her time working from home and reading and studying in her room by herself. She intentionally self-isolates, because she fears the ways in which exposing herself to “the cheap and stupid” might compromise “the monument of seriousness” that is her soul (2). Therefore, before she sees Moon in concert, she devotes her time and energy to cultivating what the Music Professor later refers to as a diverse intellect (128).
