Summary

In Chapter 10, “Kinship,” the narrator wakes up determined to find Moon at the Sanctuary. While searching, she encounters Mister Suguk, Miss Lina, and the Caregiver. Then she continues her search for Moon, finally coming upon Miss Lina’s workspace. All of the cherry blossoms are rotting. She hopes Moon will find her there, but Miss Lina arrives instead, greeting her as if she is Moon.

The more she searches, the more convinced the narrator becomes that Moon is in the space she has just vacated. Then she encounters Mister Suguk and his student, a girl named Maehwa. Maehwa tells the narrator about her restaurant job and her stints at “a juvenile detention center” (163). She wants to give up, but the narrator insists she is “still so young” (163). Maehwa then explains that she is at the Sanctuary to see Moon and that Mister Suguk...
