Summary
In Chapter 6, “At the Center of the Universe,” the narrator decides to attend a performance “Moon’s former ballet company” is hosting (85). On the way, a woman named O exclaims at her shoes. The narrator bought the shoes from a street vendor when her sneakers fell apart on a walk. O made the shoe soles at work. When O learns that the narrator is going to meet the person she loves, she insists on joining. She wants to see where her soles take the narrator (87).
O is surprised that the narrator’s lover does not show up. The narrator explains that he does not know she exists. O is unsurprised, insisting that she trusts her soles and they are telling her to follow the narrator (89).
