Summary
In Chapter 3, “fleurfloor,” Masterson tells the narrator he cannot fall in love with her (39). He has been in love before, and this is not how it feels. The narrator does not know how to express her feelings, but is unsurprised by Masterson’s declarations because he has never been curious about her. Before he leaves, she tells him he is “the stupidest person” (40).
The narrator writes Moon a letter, but addresses it to Masterson. When he does not respond, she writes another letter which turns into a story.
In the story, the narrator encounters a beautiful man “at a bus stop in Berlin” (41). They share a cigarette and go out to eat. Afterwards, they exchange numbers. The next day, she reads the philosopher Moon’s new book. They start spending time together and fall in love with him.
