Summary
In Chapter 1, “A Pack of Boys,” the narrator hears about a Korean boyband and their rise to popularity. Her flatmate Vavra talks about them constantly. However, the more Vavra urges the narrator to like the boys, the more they repulse her (2). When the band performs in Berlin, Vavra begs the narrator to go, insisting the concert “will change [her] life” (2). The narrator likes her life how it is and prefers to read and study alone. She eventually gives in, although afraid of compromising herself by going.
At the arena, the narrator is swept away by the crowd. She watches the boys appear on stage, each of them “named after a celestial body” (4).
