Summary

The first chapter is titled “Day Zero, just after midnight.” Jen Brotherhood is waiting up for her 18-year-old son Todd. It is just after midnight on October 30, 2022. She carved a pumpkin that is now displayed in the window. Her husband Kelly joins her in the living room. He is naked and she notes his tattoo – the date he knew he loved her. He is 43 now. He is self-employed and says he is glad the Merrilocks job is finished. He is indifferent to the fact that the neighbors all had pumpkins which is why Jan carved one. Kelly is going back to bed, but Jen is waiting up for Todd. She thinks about a woman she is representing in a divorce case. The couple is fighting over dishes.
