Summary
Part VII is titled “March to November 1361.” In Chapter 81, Wulfric is now 40. Sam is a large man. Most believe he is large because Wulfric is his father, but Gwenda knows he looks like his real father, Ralph. She blames Ralph for the “mean streak” (913) Ralph exhibits. Sam, 22, left home without saying where he was going. Gwenda knows he is trying to earn a higher wage than he can earn in Wigleigh but she worries about him. Gwenda happens to encounter Harry Plowman during a trip to market and he quietly tells Gwenda that Sam is at Outhen. Gwenda makes the trip to Outhen. She tries to be careful but Jonno, the son of Nate the bailiff, follows. (Jonno and Sam have always hated each other.)
