Summary
Part VI is titled “January 1349 to January 1351. In Chapter 63, Caris discovers that Godwyn took everything of value, including all the charters. Elizabeth tries to find an excuse but Henri dismisses it. Henri approves Caris as prioress but she insists that he convene a court to formally dismiss the charge of witchcraft. Henri sees the advantages of that and agrees. Caris goes into town to see if anyone knows where Godwyn has gone. No one does but she finds people drunk despite the early hour and neighbors fighting over the possessions of the dead. She finds a 13-year-old girl prostituting herself because she is hungry. Caris deals with each situation. Elfric is upset that Godwyn is gone because Godwyn has been his patron over the years. There are many clergymen dead from the plague. Henri says nuns can hear confessions now but...
