Summary
William and Philippa (son and daughter-in-law of Roland), live at Casterham and a group of Wigleigh residents go there to press their complaint about Ralph. Gwenda has a moment alone with Philippa and explains the situation. She urges Philippa to use her influence with William to ensure that Ralph is punished. Gwenda says no one will be safe from Ralph. Philippa, who has been the object of Ralph's obvious infatuation for years, understands. The next morning, William tells Annet the next step, which is a formal complaint filed in court but warns that she will be punished if she changes her mind about testifying. If found guilty, Ralph will be hanged. That night, everyone sleeps in a main room and Gwenda makes love to Wulfric, feeling the need to repair their relationship which is still suffering from Wulfric's anger when Gwenda...
