Summary
In Chapter 22, Godwyn introduces Murdo to Roland, carefully planting the idea of Murdo as prior while pretending to object to the idea. Godwyn and Philemon then go to St.-John-in-the-Forest where Godwyn presents the idea of becoming prior in a way that makes Saul refuse to consider it. When Godwyn returns to Kingsbridge, Roland is furious and decides to nominate Murdo. Next, Godwyn has Philemon show Murdo the charter Isabella issued as payment for Thomas to become a monk. Though Godwyn has no idea what the charter means, he believes that Thomas will not want his secret to be known. Murdo confronts Thomas in front of all the monks, asking why Queen Isabella granted land as payment for Thomas to become a monk. Godwyn can tell that Thomas's emotions are running high, and is surprised to realize that Thomas is afraid...
