Summary
Part III is titled “June to December, 1337.” In Chapter 14, the citizens hold funerals all week. Caris, who feels she has been given a second chance at life, insists that Merthin should not marry Griselda though Merthin says he has to take care of his child. Gwenda broke the bottle containing the love potion when the bridge collapsed and Caris takes her to get another from Mattie. The conversation turns to pregnancies, and Mattie says she can tell how far along a woman is by looking at her. She says Griselda is “three months gone” (182). Caris gives that information to Merthin who says he had sex with Griselda only one time, about two weeks earlier, meaning he is not the baby's father.
