Summary
Chapter 7 begins with Molloy and his group about two weeks after departing Omaha. Molloy has been drunk most of the time, and the winter cold begins to replace the fall weather. Kohn spies a small group of civilians in a caravan north, and suggests to the captain that he shave and make himself presentable before their approach. As Molloy does so, he recalls his time fighting as a soldier in Italy in defense of the Papal States six years previous, and his recruitment into the Union army. The group approaches and sees that it is comprised of Amish or Mennonite pilgrims and some Indians. The pilgrims ask the soldiers to rid them of the Indians, who they claim are tormenting and stealing from them. Jonathan drives away the Indians and Kohn begins speaking German to one of the men, asking for a meal...
