Chapter 5, Summary
Roland Deschain, Cuthbert Allgood and Alain Johns present themselves to Sheriff Herk Avery as three boys send to count goods for the Affiliation as punishment. Avery makes it clear he doesn't think much of their city ways but invites them to a dinner at Mayor Hart Thorin's home. When the boys leave, the men say they think the boys are soft, and the boys think that the sheriff is a liar. At the Mayor's dinner, the boys meet the mayor, Kimba Rimer, Eldred Jonas and Susan Delgado. Roland keeps his promise and pretends to be meeting Susan for the first time, but Cordelia is suspicious of the way Susan looks at Roland.
