Summary

In “Comfort,” it is “Simone’s most hated time of year” though she is unsure if it is May, June, July, or August (45). She does not know if she is anxious because of “the joint she smoked,” her inability to sleep, or her headache (45). The headache could be due to the remedies she took or the “few too many glasses of white wine” she drank (45).

Kelvin sleeps in bed next to her. She often has a man with her. She recalls the night before. When she gets up, she studies the overgrown yard outside “her street-level apartment” (46). When Marcus was alive, they would sit outside discussing their futures. Now that she has money from “the settlement of the civil lawsuit,” Simone cannot imagine using it (47).
