Summary
Bernice continues to spend her time reading. She runs out of sick days at work, and the students start complaining that she is giving them strange advice about love. One day, Dove comes home from work at close to five in the morning. Bernice tells him she is sick. Dove says he will go out and get her some soup. Bernice mocks Dove for his love of soup, but he and Silas go anyway.
While walking to the diner, Dove reminisces about how he and his friends used to go there. Silas asks what happened to his friends, and Dove explains that some of them grew up and had kids while others simply "moved on" (11). Silas wonders if Dove can sense that Bernice is moving on from him, too.
