Summary

The story begins with the narrator, Silas, being interrupted by his older sister, Bernice. He thinks she is coming because she is upset with him for not answering her calls and texts the night before, but instead she tells him that she met a man on the street and is going to attend one of his DJ gigs. The previous night, she had taken a car to the emergency room, where the doctors told her she was fine and her discomfort was likely due to stress.

Silas is skeptical of his sister's decision to meet Dove, the DJ, but does not say much about his feelings. Instead, he asks his sister if she is okay after her hospital visit. They both laugh about their mother's warning to them that they need to exaggerate their pain when dealing with white doctors.
