Point of View

The novel is written in first person from the limited perspective of a young woman named Andromeda. Though she seems intent on being an honest and thorough narrator, there are several factors that affect her ability to do so. She had an unconventional childhood under the care of a guardian named Jember. Jember stole Andromeda after her parents sold her to a brothel, saving her from a horrible fate. However, Jember did not have the ability to give her a traditional life. He had disabilities due to his work as a debtera, limited resources, and no one to help with Andromeda's care. When he took Andromeda in, he lived in a rough neighborhood. Though their living situation improved slightly after the church became Jember's patron, they still faced dangerous situations in Jember's work and in their daily lives.
