Summary

In Chapter 31, Andromeda wakes against Magnus. Andromeda's happiness is tempered by the knowledge of what will happen in the Waking. Esjay arrives. Andromeda tells him that Peggy left. Esjay is angry when he learns Kelela is here. Andromeda can tell Saba gave Jember a haircut. Kelela hugs Andromeda, urging her to defeat the hyena. Jember says Kelela does not have to be present for the hyena to become active. Andromeda and Jember prepare shields. Andromeda sees Jember and Saba playing around. Magnus arrives just as Saba kisses him. Magnus is annoyed and calls Jember a “scoundrel.” Andromeda says “Everyone's deserving of love” (293). She distracts him by having him give her a lesson on the harpsichord. The instrument begins to bleed. Magnus says “the house bleeds after the Evil Eye takes a victim” (295). He assumes it is Peggy. She says Peggy died bravely...
