Summary
In Chapter 20, Andromeda studies Jember's amulet. She sees strokes that form patterns that she recognizes, but other strokes seem to be chaos. She works through the strokes on a chalkboard, knowing she will then have to practice on wood until it is perfect. Jember continues to make Andromeda construct the strokes many times. He says she needs a special gold thread for the amulet, and they go to a tomb where he picks the thread from a coffin. He refuses to let her help, noting that the thread will be useless if she breaks it. When he has enough, Andromeda thanks him for his help. They hear voices and Jember notes there are “grave robbers” approaching. Andromeda knows that “We were grave robbers,” but she does not make that point.
