Summary
In “Summer,” Chapter 10, while on her first date with Myra, a woman she had met on a dating app, Sammie wondered about “the right time to tell a date you’re still married” (105, Arnett’s italics). Myra was “Sammie’s type,” but she doubted the date would go anywhere (106). Myra asked questions about Sammie’s musical preferences and hobbies. Sammie had trouble answering, still struggling to balance her responsibilities to her family and herself (109). Outside the bar, Sammie and Myra kissed. Sammie had been ignoring calls from Monika all evening. After saying goodbye to Myra, Sammie bought fast food, devouring it back in the quiet of her home. She and Monika still lived together though they had split up. Monika called again. Sammie picked up. She was at the bowling alley where Samson worked and demanded Sammie come over immediately.
