Summary
In “Winter,” Sammie left her four-year-old Samson on the playground while she gathered their things. While throwing out the trash and airing out the car, Sammie saw a woman struggling with a stroller in the heat. Sammie’s body hurt, too. She had been exhausted and sore ever since Samson’s birth. When she “turned back around,” she saw a middle-aged man leading Samson to his truck (4). Sammie yelled after them. Samson did not answer. She raced to the man’s truck, where he had buckled Samson in. She yelled at him, shocked that the nearby woman had done nothing. The man insisted Samson had asked to see his truck.
