Summary
It is the last day of April, but in the early morning an old man attaches Red’s first Wishing Day wish of the year. A car’s passengers egg Red’s trunk. The animals eat the eggs, recognizing that the hurtful gesture can still be a benefit. Stephen and Samar leave for school. Samar interrupts Stephen’s apology to check that they both remember Red’s story. They look at Red as if waiting for another speech, but Red stays silent, even when Samar asks it for confirmation. The children walk away side by side as Stephen’s father and Samar’s mother watch in silence.
Early wishes continue throughout the day. Sandy and Max remove the police tape and Francesca informs them that the tree cutters are coming to give an estimate. Sandy and Max worry about the animals, but Francesca...
