Point of View

Jodi Picoult uses Diana as the main narrator of Wish You Were Here. In Part 1, Finn occasionally narrates the story through sporadic emails, but Diana is the primary narrator of the story. They both narrate through a first-person perspective.

Diana’s storytelling reflects her state of mind. In the beginning of the novel, flashbacks continuously interrupt her narration. Diana has difficulty focusing on one thing at a time. Each time she encounters a new situation in her day to day life, she recalls a different moment in her life or discusses something she wants to accomplish on her checklist. As the story progresses, Diana experiences less flashbacks. This highlights her ability to appreciate the present and live in the moment.
