Summary
In Chapter 3, Diana falls into a routine on the island, exploring it alone. She notes that she talks to herself because her voice has “gone rusty with disuse” (59). One morning, she sees the girl from the docks outside of her apartment picking up trash. She introduces herself as Beatriz. She is home from school due to Covid and hates living on Isabela. Beatriz does not get along with her father, Gabriel. Beatriz offers to mail Diana’s postcards for her.
Later, Diana goes to a store to pick up supplies and clothes. She panics that she is running out of cash with no way to get more.
Diana gets an email from Finn describing the horrors of the Covid outbreak. It includes the absence of visitors and the hospital’s lack of beds.
In a flashback from 2014, Diana remembers how her father died...
