Part 1, Chapter 10 Summary
Lame Bull is happy being the proprietor of his own ranch. Lame Bull and the narrator spend a day bringing in the alfalfa crop together. For extra help to stack the bales, Lame Bull hires Long Knife. Long Knife comes from a family with a strong reputation for hard work. However, Long Knife is on the lazy side. The first few days go well with Long Knife and the narrator building the stacks. However, on the third day they take the morning off to allow the bales to dry out from the humidity in the air. Long Knife shows up in the field, but instead of working, he asks for his pay and a ride into town. Lame Bull does not want to allow him to leave until the work is finished, but Long Knife insists.
