Play
The play is a sign of pain. Meredith writes and puts on a stage-version of her mother’s fairy tale hoping that it will make her mother love her. Instead, Anya is only angry with Meredith. Meredith had no way to know that she was performing a play that was a version of her mother’s life, and that Anya still missed Sasha, the prince she had meet in the fairy tale.
Winter Garden
The winter garden is a symbol of the past. Anya spends a good deal of her time in what she calls her winter garden, even when the temperatures are below freezing. Meredith believes that she is doing her mother a favor when she cleans out the garden and plants new flower seeds. Instead, Anya is angry with her daughter.
