Sidra
Sidra is the protagonist of the story. She is almost 40 years old, and she has made a living as “a minor movie star” (6). However, she has become disillusioned with her work and with life in Hollywood. She concludes that her willingness to do raunchy things onscreen is the product of a subconscious impulse for attention that she does not like. Sidra moves back to her hometown of Chicago. There, she lives in a room in a cheap hotel, and she develops aspirations to have a quiet life of domesticity and anonymity. She wishes to have a family, but she finds herself generally isolated and lonely in Chicago.
One day, she meets a man named Walt in a bar. Walt is an auto mechanic, and Sidra finds herself attracted to him. Sidra pursues a relationship with Walt, hoping that Walt may be her partner in building a simple family...
