Heroes
Meloy brings this fantasy world to life as he shows that superheroes come in all shapes and sizes and that no deed is too small to contribute to the success of a mission. Throughout the novel, the author draws on the motif of superheroes beginning with Curtis and Prue's shared interest in drawing comic book figures and superheroes. Curtis, in particular, still revels in action adventures and is excited to discover that he can play the part of a hero as he encounters the army in Wildwood. He thinks about heroes he has read about in books and imagines that he is now like them, dressed in his uniform and swinging his sword. Although Prue does not specifically see herself as a superhero, Meloy alludes to her role as one when she prepares to return to Wildwood, having learned the truth about Mac from her parents...
