St. John's, Portland
St. John's is the section of Portland where Prue and her family live. The town is bordered on the north by the Willamette River. A railroad bridge spans the river and leads to an area known as the Industrial Wastes, a steel sea of factories pouring out smoke. Prue is very comfortable riding around town on her bicycle and takes her brother along in a red Radio Flyer wagon that she hooks to the back. Prue and Curtis learn that Portland is referred to as The Outside by the people and animals in the woods. None of the inhabitants of the wood ever choose to go to the Outside. Many consider it overcrowded and distasteful. The bandits see it as ruined by the people of Portland since the rivers have been polluted and much of the wild land has been paved.
